Is there anybody who has the Dragon Scimitar, and more specifically, purchased theirs from Kult of Athena? What are your thoughts about it? I'm in the market for my first sword, and would really appreciate your opinions.

Sat, November 4, 2006 - 5:07 PMI spoke to Cult Of Athena about this sword- it is not recommended for bellydance use due to the fact that it tends not to balance well.

Re: Dragon Scimitar
Sun, November 5, 2006 - 6:52 AMShe was quick to point out for me that this is the sword that she danced consistantly with for her first eight years, then she upgraded to a bigger, brighter round pommeled sword..
The pattern that is on the blade itself now adorns her right ankle as a tattoo......
THAT"s why it's on the floor..."Like a loyal dog waiting for it's matser..." (she says...)

Re: Dragon Scimitar
Mon, November 6, 2006 - 7:33 PMI'm not sure where these swords come from, but there is a variety on quality and balance. If Kof A says it's iffy, I'm sure it is.
This is the same scimitar Saroyan sells, but I belive he modifies his for dancers.
Yes the 'raw' one can balance, or be bent until they do, and yes, if you turn the handle around it balances fine (speaking from personal experience).
In general, this is a favorite model for dancers. My first one was this model.
I like it better then the cheap Indian ones, in that it's heavier.
You can still use 2 comfortably.
For a first sword it's fine if you get a balanced one. They can take a lot of dropping while you hone your skills.
You can always upgrade when your skill are sharper. (heehee, sorry) -

Re: Dragon Scimitar
Thu, November 16, 2006 - 7:08 PMThose are not the same swords Saroyan sells. They are knock offs..I offer a similar dragon head sword on my web site. I guarantee a perfect balance for belly dancers..
Heres the scoop on the dragon head swords from a person who has sold hundreds of them. There are 3 companys that make the knock offs and none are Saroyan quaility hence the $200 lower price..2 of the companys make crap swords you would be lucky if 1 in 50 balanced well enough for a belly dancer. One company makes a good sword. But they are a tad more pricey than the link listed above.I buy mine from the more expeninsive company
maybe 1 in 20 needs a slight tweak to bring it into what i consider perfect balance for belly dancing ..
The dragon head swords are lighter with less of a curve which in turn makes them feel slick and a little bit harder to balance. They weight about 2.5 lbs..a little surf board wax on the back bone of the sword will remove that slick feeling. a few grooves filed into the back bone will remove the slick feeling as well ( but that's cheating hehehehehe)
Another down fall to them is they are made from a softer metal than Saroyan uses they are a lower grade stainless steel again another reson for the much lower price. They can be knocked out of perfect balance. but are very easy to re balance.
The upside to them is their nice look and light weight , if you like the feel of a lighter sword
and when one is balanced properly you would have a very hard time feeling the difference
between a high quaility kncok off and a Saroyan of the same design.
I have found swords are a very personal item "feel" is what matters. So opinons vary from one dancer to the next.. I havent seen many dancers who like the heavier real sword feel of a cas ibra sword which weighs alomst 4 lbs say they like the dragon head swords and vise versa..
A tip when buying.. Buy from a person who knows bellydance and knows the balance bellydancers require..Chances are high even if buying the sword via the internet you will get exactly what your looking for.. There a quite a few swords vendors who are dancers as well that sell fantastic swords and stand behind the balance..
I hope this helps

Re: Dragon Scimitar
Mon, January 7, 2008 - 2:36 PMSince I'm a dragon nut I'm looking at Dragon Scimitars (even though everyone else has the Baladay/CAS scimitars). Does yours balance guard up (as shown in pics) or guard down (as a lot of the non-Saroyans I've seen). Since I'm also a sword junkie, I'd hate to have an "improper" sword, if you know what I mean. -

Thu, January 10, 2008 - 10:43 AMMy guard is up (not flipped). I just think it doesn't look right when it's not. -

Re: Dragon Scimitar
Thu, January 10, 2008 - 1:00 PMNeither do I. IMO it would be worth buying the more expensive sword so it would look right. Thanks!!!

Fri, November 17, 2006 - 12:15 PMThanks for the info!
I just knew from what someone had told me. The quality of the Saroyans is obviously better, and they are made for dancers.
I didn't even think of a knock off.

Re: Dragon Scimitar
Fri, November 10, 2006 - 6:28 AMHey Friga!
You know what? I have one very similar to this (if not the same thing) and you are welcome to come over and try it. In fact...I would strongly suggest it. It does indeed lean and requires a certain level of comfortability. You can compare it to the practice sword I have (incidentally I have an extra) and the Indian style...of which I have as well but do not recommend because some of them are too slippery and cheaply made.

Re: Dragon Scimitar
Thu, March 22, 2007 - 12:56 PMI have the Dragon Scimitar
It is very sensitive to bending causing it to "lean"
I fixed it by putting it over my knee and gently bending it the oppostite direction until it stood straight up. I love it. Its nice and light and doesnt have a heavy handle so its easier to turn with, it doesn't take on a mind of its own and develop its own turning momentum!
check out my site and link for youtube video of me dancing with it with Troupe Arabesque if you want to see it in action :)
Another troupe member has the same one.
I bought the Moorish and I love the drama with dancing with it but it is more challenging for the neophyte such as myself :)
Go for it!

it's ok as a sword if you're willing to deal with the softness and bending, i'm personally saving up for one of those fabulous CAS Iberia hawk headed scimitars............those ROCK! -

Follow-up
Wed, April 11, 2007 - 9:11 PMMan, I didn't realize people were still posting on this thread. Shows me for not checking in for a while.
I did end up getting the sword back at Christmastime. Ordered it from Riz. It was around $100, and well worth it. It's not as heavy as a CAS, but it has a decent amount of weight to it, and doesn't feel like it's going to fall off my head like some lightweight ones do. It's not at all flimsy, and I've had no experience with tipping along the edge - it just stays vertical once it's on my head. -
