just got a new sword (online, no possible chance of purchasing a sword in person where i live!).. it balances (yeah!), and even balances while in the scabbard. I love to do the dramatic "remove sword from scabbard" thing. But the sword does not fit snugly in the scabbard it came with-- I'm not storing it in the scabbard, but I would like to use it as a prop. Any ideas? Also, sword has a few small rust spots... (I know, I should send it back, but the shipping and customs charges just aren't worth it, and since I'm a beginner and the darn thing actually balances, I'll deal)...
so-- tighten up the scabbard advice and rust advice anyone? thanks....

Re: sword in scabbard
Thu, October 4, 2007 - 9:13 AMTo make the scabbard fit snugly, glue in a thin piece of soft wood (pear, for example, no beech, oak or redwood) to one side of the scabbard´s mouthpiece. Don´t worry if the fit seems too tight at first, the grain will be compressed in due time.
Olive oil and fine pumice powder work well against rust if the spots are not too big. Olive oil contains acid that attacks oxidation faster than it does metal. Daub with olive oil, then "salt" with pumice. Then polish with a lint-free cloth. Repeat as necessary.
For larger or deeply rusted spots, first use copper mesh to remove the worst parts.
It may have been that the rusting occurred during transport, when the blade was subject to rapid temperature / humidity changes. The scabbard creates a kind of separate microclimate. A fine (!) coating of ballistic oil helps if you are going to store the sword in the scabbard while travelling, but is a bugger to get rid of when you´re backstage (kind of like checking the oil on your car while in costume).
Hope this helps! -

Re: sword in scabbard
Mon, October 29, 2007 - 10:20 AMSeems the sword in question has lost its balance since you dropped it. How come? If it´s bent, can you bend it back? If something´s broken, you might be able to solder it on (or have that done). Even if it´s less attractive now, you might be able to keep it as a practice sword if you can restore its balance. -

Tue, October 30, 2007 - 3:28 AMit didn't bend, just does not balance the way it did before. and, the balance point is now in a different spot.
frustrating! still doesnt fit in the dang scabbard, though..... -

Re: sword in scabbard
Tue, October 30, 2007 - 6:47 AMHmmmm... how could the balance have changed without bending and without something actually breaking off? I´d have to see the weapon (which is kinda hard to do since I´m in Germany). If the blade itself is still straight, maybe the hilt or guard is now at a slight angle to the blade? -

Re: sword in scabbard
Wed, October 31, 2007 - 1:12 PMpossible! the hilt does have a big scratch on it from dinging into the asphalt. i'll check that! -

Thu, November 1, 2007 - 6:01 AMYou might also check if the tang is bent... if the hilt is removable. -

Re: sword in scabbard
Thu, November 1, 2007 - 9:01 AMSounds like it could be a off balance hilt. If it has a scabbard, it's likely one on those Indian swords.
I was always having to adjust the hilt balance.
Some possible balancing tricks are intentionially bending the blade (only slightly!) to counterbalance. Wedging a penny or nickle into the hilt on the side (or taping it to the base of the blade.)
I had so many cheap swords for a while, i got really good at taking them apart and re-balancing them.
