Cross-posted from Denise at the tribal belly dance tribe...

Hello all.
Please support you sisters in the UK. We are now banned from purchasing dance swords.
Sad news I'm afraid. I have just spoken to Jonathan Batt, at the home office who has confirmed that we (belly and tribal dancers in the UK) are covered in the VCR (Violent Crimes Reduction Bill).
As Belly dancers, we are not covered in the exemptions of being classed as a 'sporting activity' or a Historical reenactment. While we can perform with our existing swords, if you have public liability insurance. You can no longer purchase a new blade.
This is scary thought, as if we are not included in the exclusions to the ban, the art form of sword dancing will ultimately die out in the UK! my sword was broken recently In a workshop when it was dropped. I now can't get a new one....
The only way we can get this changed for all belly dancers is to contact the home office and request that as a dance form that we are allowed to continue to be allowed to purchase swords, so that we can continue with a beautiful art form.
Please, Please take the time to contact Jonathan and request that he put forward to the Home Office that bellydancers and tribal dancers are made exempt from the VCR Bill. He is a nice guy and has agreed to be the contact point for this query. It will take a huge volume of dancers contacting him to make a difference, so please take the time to write to him.
His contact details are Jonathan.Batt@Homeoffice.gsi.gov.uk
Also if you are a member of a tribe, where this is not mentioned, can you please post information there.
Ta
Denise

Wed, April 30, 2008 - 3:28 AMThat's covered too. They get 6 months plus £5,000 fine... you should be OK though, it only covers the seller, maker, lender, importer etc.

Re: Swords banned in the UK...please read (X-post)
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 12:05 AMAren't bellydance swords balanced "backwards" anyways? I always thought that with a curved blade the weight should be *towards* the sharp edge - if you wanted to actually hurt someone with it, that is. Wouldn't that be a good reason to make an exception to the UK rule? Or am I making a silly assumption based on fencing sabers used 20 years ago? -

Re: Swords banned in the UK...please read (X-post)
Sat, April 26, 2008 - 11:35 AMDear Ladies, as the webmaster of a UK bellydance site (www.lincolnshirebellydancer.co.uk) I came across this subject when I received an email about an e-petition. Something didn't seem quite right so I did a bit of research on the subject and combined that with my past police knowledge. As a result I wrote an article which can be found on the Articles and Reviews page of my website.
Just to be sure you understand, I'm NOT a lawyer and this is my personal opinion, not a legal opinion... and also make sure you read my description of what I would call a standard UK belly dance sword! There's a big difference between the ones I know to be on sale in the UK and those on sale elsewhere.
In short, my opinion is that it's much ado about nothing. A UK bellydance sword isn't really a sword. It's made for belly dancers to balance on their heads and not for killing or injuring people. If you want to carry a more authentic sword around you may have problems but not with the ones I've seen.
Enjoy!

Re: Swords banned in the UK...please read (X-post)
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 4:17 PMSome dance swords are just props, others are real swords. For some props, yes, the grip and guard are backward, to aid in balancing. Others are a solid piece of metal, with no edge, like a huge curved butter-knife.
Other swords, like the Cas Iberia (the swords I use) arrive battle-ready and balanced for fighting. Being a smart person who enjoys having 10 fingers, I took a little of the keen edge off my swords, so that if a sword slips and I grab for it I still keep all digits, and also if a hapless child grabs one at a festival, I'm not looking at a lawsuit (Yes, I've actually had a child grab my sword from off a table at a festival while I was performing a troupe dance before my sword solo). However, these swords are still sharp enough to cut with a thrust or a strike. Apparently this counts as a weapon, then, though I have never used it as one and have no intention of doing so.
So, my hopes of touring England and teaching sword workshops are dashed to the ground... -

I will just have to help you do it in France, then! All our UK friends can hop the Channel, learn your moves, and campaign for the day when they can show them off! -

Wed, April 30, 2008 - 3:25 AMFancy going into business as a belly dance sword runner? .... Moonlight trips across the channel to deserted beached with a fishing boat loaded to the gunwales with contraband dance swords? We could make a mint!

Re: Swords banned in the UK...please read (X-post)
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 3:22 AMDenise pointed out to me on another thread that while I may be right in my assessment of the prop swords, being right doesn't do us a lot of good when no retailers are willing to "stick their necks out "and sell prop swords. A search of online UK belly dance retailers revealed only one who still listed swords and when I asked if I could buy one for my wife I was told sorry, she doesn't stock them any more and hadn't updated her website yet. :-( -

Re: Swords banned in the UK...please read (X-post)
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 11:20 AMI found an online retailer with with "sword shaped belly dance accessories" who's not afraid to sell them!!
Donna Conway of South Yorks has or can get "sword shaped belly dance accessories" from her wholesaler. Contact her through her website at www.arab-esque.co.uk
I don't think she has them listed in her shop but if you email her she'll tell you what type she has and cost etc.
