I bought a sword (for dancing) & found it was kind of slick along the part where you balance it. I took a file & tried to rough up the edge so it would not be so slick. This took off the chrome coating along the edge & then caused the chrome to peel off in irregular areas. Oops. Now I have a sword that is not slick on the balancing edge, but has peeling chrome and areas of metal that looks like it is starting to rust - not sure about the rust, but it sure looks like it.
My question is - what can I do to get the rest of the chrome off & how do I treat the metal so it doesn't rust but is not greasy?
It is a good, well-balanced sword, I just totally screwed up the finish. Argh!!!!!!

Sun, September 2, 2007 - 6:46 PMIf the mettle under the chrome looks like it is shineable then you can remove the rest of the chrome with a mettle nail file, some of it may just peel right off. Go to the store and get some silver polish, you might want to go some where that sells really swords and knives to find out how to take care of your sword. But it the mettle under the chrome is rusting and does not look like you could shine, then you should just take it to a professional to remove and rechrome your sword.
The other thing is if you just bought it the sword it should not have any rust and if it does you should return it. There is no way to really remove rust. -

Mon, September 3, 2007 - 4:48 PMThink I'll go to a pro. It did not show rust right away - only after I had peeled off the chrome on some areas. Thanks for the response. -

Mon, September 3, 2007 - 6:30 PMSome types of steel rusts. So, it's coated with another metal to keep it looking shiny. I hope it's not too expensive to fix.
When you get your sword back, to keep it from sliding when you're balancing it, use some bees wax. It really does the trick.

Sat, September 8, 2007 - 8:12 AMWhen I was involved with a riding stable, the owner used to take bits and stirrups off to a place that applied chroming. Go to the yellow pages and look for metal finishing places. If the balance is good, I'd simply file some grooves in the area where you want to balance it, then take it to a metal finisher who will strip off all the old chrome and apply a new layer. Since it flaked off so easily, it must not have been applied very well to start with. You should have been able to file down to the base metal, but the chroming should not have flaked off like that. You will most likely be able to have it redone better than it was to start with.
