Hi, i'm new here. Been bellydancing since 2002. i love the sword and there is a question I've had lingering for awhile. When spinning with a sword on your head is it possible to spin and stop without the sword flying off or is the only way to take the sword off gracefully into another spin or into a stop? Hope that makes sense...

Re: Spinning while balacing a sword
Wed, February 6, 2008 - 9:29 AMThe first way I was taught (recently, and as a novice swordie I'm open to other methods) is to place one's arm up on each side of the sword that'd keep moving when you stop. If turning counterclockwise, for example, block the front right side and the rear left side with one's palm and back of hand. Does that make sense? :) -

Re: Spinning while balacing a sword
Wed, February 6, 2008 - 4:25 PMYes, it's not only possible to come to a stop after a spin, but quite a common move. It's really a matter of applied physics that depends on the weight of your sword, how fast you're spinning, and what measures you've taken (such as sticky hair spray or a nubby head wrap on your hair or beeswax on the sword) to keep the sword in place. If you have a light sword, you'll want to either spin slower or put more sticky stuff on the sword or your head. With a heavy sword you can do faster spins or get away with less sticky stuff. Play around with these three factors and you should be able to find something that works for you. If all else fails, there's the manual brake Matthew mentioned. -

Re: Spinning while balacing a sword
Thu, February 7, 2008 - 9:24 AMAnother fun thing to do from a fast spin is to grab the sword with your hand and continue spinning fast. There are several nifty things you can do from there...(more for me to add to that DVD, right?) -

I shall continue to pine.

Re: Spinning while balacing a sword
Thu, February 7, 2008 - 9:52 AMDo you mean that I could stop with a sword on my head without doing anything to brace it with my hands as in the previous post? -

Re: Spinning while balacing a sword
Thu, February 7, 2008 - 9:59 AMI keep trying and it never works to spin and then stop. I try without head wraps and was wondering if it's at all possible without one. I have two swords that are not alike. My first one is lighter. I don't know it's weight. My second which i got for xmas is 2 and 1/2 pounds ...i think. It's way different to balance and much stronger. My first is bent outta shape and not nearly as impressive looking as my new one.
Thankz for all the posts! -

Re: Spinning while balacing a sword
Thu, February 7, 2008 - 11:17 AMYou can stop and have the sword stop with you without stopping it with your hands. If you have fine hair you might want to wear a headdress when doing this unless you're willing to dump a can of aqua net on your head. You want to create a lot of friction between the sword and your head. It has to overcome this friction in order to keep spinning when you stop. The faster you spin, the greater the friction will have to be to keep the sword from going propeller on you. I think one of your main problems is that you're using two swords with different masses and balance points (and it sounds like one of your swords has problems with the balance point). If you're doing double-sword balance it makes life a lot easier to use two identical swords. For all balancing the key is making sure the prop balances in one point, and that if you dropped a plum bob from that point it would hit the ground making a 90 degree angle between the floor and string. When it's on your head (or shoulder, hip, or leg) the balance point should still be perpendicular to the floor. If it's off, the prop won't stay put. The bends in your first sword are probably keeping it from balancing it properly. If it's not coated with shiny stuff you can usually bend them back into shape with your bare hands (or get a muscular friend to do it).

Re: Spinning while balacing a sword
Thu, February 7, 2008 - 2:38 PMNote from physics, though (as Inarus mentioned) the sword will keep spinning if you are spinning fast and stop suddenly--Newton's Law, you know, you can't break it. But, you can slow down gradually--as long as your headdress/hair/balance point provide the necessary friction.
If you want to come to a sudden stop from a fast spin and have the sword still on your head, you can stop it by putting one arm up behind the sword on the leading edge of the spin (so the spin carries the sword against the arm). Even then, a truly abrupt stop can dislodge your sword--better to have a fast "press" (sword starting to press against the raised arm for just a moment) and then stop. You can balance the look by having the other arm raised, as well, or extended to the front. Gee, I hope this makes sense. Hard to describe sword moves over the internet. Do you have a teacher near you? Live instruction would be much better!
good luck~~

Re: Spinning while balacing a sword
Fri, February 8, 2008 - 10:03 AMAnother fun thing to do with abrupt stops with fast spins that I've been playing around with--come to an abrupt stop, let the sword spin off your head, and catch it in the palm of your hand. I dance with a sword around 4lbs so I'm not sure if this would work with a lighter one. So far it looks like it might make a nice "Ha! I meant to do that!" move. -

Re: Spinning while balacing a sword
Mon, February 11, 2008 - 8:14 PMYep makes sense. I had thought that if I came to an abrupt stop I could only do something to work with it than keep balancing it. Just wanted to know it it wasn't just me.
Thankz everybody!
