Tue, December 11, 2007 - 12:47 AMHi,
I ordered some swords a while ago, and had a conversation with this lady:

Maybe she can answer your question, or at least point you in the right direction!
Good luck,

Re: Balady Scimitars
Tue, December 11, 2007 - 11:49 AMAnd I emailed with a guy named Ryan who was really prompt with responses.
I love mine! I've had it for one day. lol! It balances, it balances! Woohoooo! I think I will use a headband because I can sure feel it on my head. Ultimately I want to use it bareheaded, but we shall see.
It's so shiny! I was concerned because of comments that a sword/scimitar shouldn't be purchased sight unseen, but I'm in New Mexico and have no choice. Actually, I'm grateful for internet and UPS. Initially I wanted a Saroyan, but I inquired and Marge said they have a no return policy. What! Even my Dell can be returned if I don't like it. My policy is that if I can't return it I can't buy it. My luck is - I'd get the one Saroyan that had some kind of defect. -

Re: Balady Scimitars
Tue, December 11, 2007 - 12:26 PMI'm (not quite so) patiently waiting for that knock on the door from UPS. They tried to deliver yesterday but we were both at work, and the package requires a signature. So UPS left behind a little note, stating that they would try to deliver it today between 10am-2pm. (nervously tapping foot). Come on...UPS...I want to be able to do my happy little sword dance!!! -
-
Two days in the local UPS place and half a day on a truck.
Tue, December 11, 2007 - 12:46 PMMine came at almost 8:00pm last night. (After sitting in the local UPS place from Saturday morning when it arrived there until yesterday when it was out for delivery at 6:30 am.) I wonder if I'm always last on their delivery list. There are several businesses in my neighborhood and I guess they're a higher priority than individuals. I was at work when they arrived, but my husband was at home.
Today, I got to play with them a little bit. They feel about as heavy as I thought they would. I won't be able to do much with them until Friday.

Re: Balady Scimitars
Tue, December 11, 2007 - 12:56 PMI don't have the luxury of trying before buying either. I might if I made a trip to Vegas, but I have no idea what's there in the way of dance swords and just kind of decided that I would get the Balady scimitars anyway .
When I went to the Utah Belly Dance Festival near Salt Lake City in August, a local boutique that was vending there was the only vendor selling swords. All of them looked so small and cheesy. Besides, with all the people walking around and browsing, how can a person really try them out?

Re: Balady Scimitars
Wed, December 12, 2007 - 8:55 PMI ordered some for my whole troupe! (well, there's only three of us but yay!) We're in Canada so I'm assuming it will take a little longer. Can't wait though! Can't wait to start dropping it on my toes...*lol* -

Re: Balady Scimitars
Wed, December 12, 2007 - 9:54 PMHaha! I've practiced with mine twice now and I haven't dropped it. I'm a little paranoid about the first drop. I think after the first time I will feel better. I have a cork from a wine bottle and tomorrow I'm going to see if I can stick it on the tip which is so very sharp.
I've already polished it with carnauba wax and love too. Heh! I'm well pleased with my purchase. -

Re: Balady Scimitars
Thu, December 13, 2007 - 7:21 AMWe got ten of these swords for my troupe (2 were for me, but the other 8 were for troupe members). For all but me, this was their first sword, and the ladies are doing great with the swords. They are well balanced, and not as 'scary' as my Cas Iberia, plus far better priced!
We used them in our latest performance - some pictures here:

And once I figure out how to encode the video I will post it on youtube!

Re: Balady Scimitars
Thu, December 13, 2007 - 4:14 PMawesome pics!! I'm really curious to check them out as we have cas iberias, the dragon scimitars and zen ptahs and these just add that little bit of difference without as you say being the full on aspect of the cas iberias!
Thanks for the email address - at the present time I've not had a reply which is a shame - we've got money to burn....just need to arrange some swords....
i'll cross my toes and wait further - alternatively if anyone is in touch with the could you please ask them to email me at tribalblossoms@iinet.net.au ??

Re: Balady Scimitars
Fri, January 4, 2008 - 2:44 PMMy question is, how does it compare to the CAS Iberia sword? I'm looking at sword dancing (drooling over the dragon scimitars from KoA if anyone has comment on those???) and for learning can't justify a lot of money for something I'm not sure I'll adore. -

Re: Balady Scimitars
Fri, January 4, 2008 - 5:28 PMThe Balady scimitar looks like the CAS Iberia. But the Balady is a little shorter, weighs a few ounces less, isn't sharp, and is made from a different type of steel.
The dragon scimitar looks like the scimitar made by Saroyan Mastercrafts. The KoA dragon scimitar costs a lot less, but has balance issues.

Re: Balady Scimitars
Fri, January 4, 2008 - 10:41 PMHi
well I've now seen all of these swords up close so feel safe to add my opinion.
The Cas Iberias...I'm 5'9 with long arms and legs, and have been dancing with sword for ages....they are the duck's nuts of swords but not a sword I'd ever put a beginner onto. they are long, heavy (great for control) capable of rusting - high maintenance. Ive not met one yet that I didnt like.
The Baladay's - I just got some for my troupe and they are a cheaper imitation - shinier and shorter. same handle. I dont think they look wrong with cas's in the mix. still feel heavy but they will suit 98% of my girls - for me they look just that bit short. They balance well and are the best bargain sword I know of. well worth getting when you can - we had to wait a year to get ours.
The dragon swords - are not my cup of tea. I find the balance hard to find, worthy of notching, and they tend to lean rather than balance. I also like the curve of the scimitar of the baladays/cas's, these are quite challenging, one of my girls has one and I find i really have to stay very low in my dance and "catch" the movement. much trickier than i'd thought.
I think the baladay is a really GOOD starting sword.

Re: Balady Scimitars
Sun, January 6, 2008 - 10:19 AMThe CAS Iberia looks so impressive, I could be happy with just one. As it is, the Baladys seem wide enough to add some extra challenge when trying to balance two on my head. So Baladys for double sword routines. And the impressive, dangerous CAS Iberia for single sword routines, eventually.
I'm barely 5'3", but I still want that kind of length in a sword.
