I was going to buy the one from Kult of Athena, but they're backordered and I was told it would take at least a month for them to come in and I need one much sooner than that. Does anyone know if there's a difference between the two that would account for the major price difference (I did notice that the weight is the same...)? How well do they balance? Do you have to flip the hilt to make it balance properly? Any info/advice would be greatly appreciated! This is my first sword, and I don't want to get ripped off and pay double what I should, but I also don't want to waste my money on something hat is poor quality.

am thinking of nataraja (solace) or karakas (maduro) - really im seeking a 3.5 min piece at the longest that will have some play in the music - something slow then fast ideally, to allow for some sword play before balancing.
Anything you've come across you'd suggest? as you can tell by the above I'm more driven by electronic sounding stuff with good clean beats.

I'm finding that they are now so common, they are losing a bit of that specialness or luster. Of course, the sword alone doesn't make a great dancer. It's still true that even the most beautiful sword in mediocre hands will make a boring performance.

Could people please post pics of different kinds of swords and add some information about it's difficulty for balancing or if it is more difficult for double sword balancing and things like how strong it is? I would like to know so I can know what to buy the next time. I have two now but they don't look alike and I'm in the dark about what they are actually. The first one is not very strong which I got at a workshop years ago and the second has a wider blade and "looks" more arabic but I don't know what it is. I got it for xmas and on the web-site there isn't enough information about it. But other than wanting to know what kind of swords I have it would be good to know about other ones too.
*******************************************
Hello all.

Please support you sisters in the UK. We are now banned from purchasing dance swords.

Sad news I'm afraid. I have just spoken to Jonathan Batt, at the home office who has confirmed that we (belly and tribal dancers in the UK) are covered in the VCR (Violent Crimes Reduction Bill).
As Belly dancers, we are not covered in the exemptions of being classed as a 'sporting activity' or a Historical reenactment. While we can perform with our existing swords, if you have public liability insurance. You can no longer purchase a new blade.

This is scary thought, as if we are not included in the exclusions to the ban, the art form of sword dancing will ultimately die out in the UK! my sword was broken recently In a workshop when it was dropped. I now can't get a new one....

The only way we can get this changed for all belly dancers is to contact the home office and request that as a dance form that we are allowed to continue to be allowed to purchase swords, so that we can continue with a beautiful art form.

Please, Please take the time to contact Jonathan and request that he put forward to the Home Office that bellydancers and tribal dancers are made exempt from the VCR Bill. He is a nice guy and has agreed to be the contact point for this query. It will take a huge volume of dancers contacting him to make a difference, so please take the time to write to him.

His contact details are Jonathan.Batt@Homeoffice.gsi.gov.uk

Also if you are a member of a tribe, where this is not mentioned, can you please post information there.

Ta

I am planning on ordering the Cas Iberia sword but everyone is saying that its a lot heavier than the balady sword.

How much heavier is my question.

I am not worried about the balance on my head, I am more concerned about swinging my arms. Is it so heavy that lifting it with one arm is impossible??

Hope that makes sense...

I finally got it to balance with tassel, bending, etc. then the handle broke just as i was starting to feel comfy with it (and practising for an upcoming show). So i ordered another one. got it, it balanced, but the sheath didnt fit well, and it has a couple of rust spots.

Last week, coming out of practise, i tripped over my friggin' pantaloons and fell down the steps and onto asphalt, flinging my new sword onto the pavement as well. guess what... now it doesn't balance quite so well.

both of these swords were inexpensive, i want to get better at the sword before i invest in an expensive one. but now i fear the universe is telling me to give it up! am i nuts? should i keep trying, or mark off sword as a dance talent?

i'm looking to sell 2 - 3 zen ptah swords, made in australia, stainless steel blade - two have bronze handles and "stones" inlaid into the blade/handle. Good balance points, scimitar shape, very "pretty" sword but also very cabaret to me, and I've fallen under the spell of the mighty Cas Iberias. GREAT beginners sword - they are all heavy swords easy to control.

I'll post pics in my profile or send if you're interested. Retail these swords are over $300 each and very hard to come by...if you're interested shoot me a message as I'll be posting to ebay at the end of the week otherwise.

I've been fencing rapier, and other weapons for years--this is the bag I wished I'd been able to get all along, and since no one was making it, I went ahead and had it manufactured. It's a "triangle" style shoulder bag that's biog enough and strong enough to carry rapiers and just about as much equipment as you could want to throw in. It;s over FIVE FEET long, and can be adjusted for shorter weapons (the top of the bag had a velcro closure in case you really need to pack something evel longer--a spear, a quando, maybe your favorite broom), the back is padded, the bottom is reinforced, there are roomy outside pockets big enough for a wet fencing jacket... I think it's really a cool poduct at a good price, and I'm trying to reach more rapier fencers. Come check it out:

I love to do the dramatic "remove sword from scabbard" thing. But the sword does not fit snugly in the scabbard it came with-- I'm not storing it in the scabbard, but I would like to use it as a prop. Any ideas? Also, sword has a few small rust spots... (I know, I should send it back, but the shipping and customs charges just aren't worth it, and since I'm a beginner and the darn thing actually balances, I'll deal)...

Now I have a sword that is not slick on the balancing edge, but has peeling chrome and areas of metal that looks like it is starting to rust - not sure about the rust, but it sure looks like it.

Ive had a look at Kult of Athena - so if you have any recommendations on the swords there apart from Cas and Moorish ( I already have those swords) that would be appreciated. My butter knives are just too light, pretty and beginnerish for me now. Im not interested in your typical pretty bellydance sword. I want something that looks like a "battle ready" sword.

OK, i live in Australia which has so far made the task of obtaining a Cas Ibera Scimitar quite a nightmare. I have only the option of buying from o/s, namely the US, IF i can find one in stock at all and that will deal with a customer outside the US!! As the shipping almost doubles the costs of the swords i get very nervous about the transaction. I almost did a couple times but soon learnt that the company was very dodgy and i refused to proceed with the transaction. Can anyone recommend or not recommend any of the common online stores? I know kult of athena is great. But what about Knife Centre? So far they seem legit and professional and i am seriously considering purchasing off them... i just thought i would run past you all first for some peace of mine.. thanks in advance!

There have been several threads on several tribes mentioning the Moorish Scimitar. One specifically, sold by KultofAthena.com. Someone on another tribe also posted another site that sold what appears to be the same scimitar for less:

http://www.edgeimport.com/store.cfm?Event=ItemDetail&ItemID=399115&ReturnTo=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Eedgeimport%2Ecom%2Fstore%2Ecfm"

I would just like to ask anyone who may already HAVE one of these scimitars, how do they work for you as a dance prop? Do they balance well? I mean, they are GORGEOUS to look at, but I was just wondering about their ability to balance well and be handled during a dance.

Any comments/reviews will be most appreciated!

I've emailed other sites including swblades, strongblades - and got a response to these questions that they didnt know if the swords would balance nor the weight....which didnt indicate they were keen to sell such goodies to me

Can you suggest someone who'd be interested in selling some swords to Australia, I'd love the moorish scimitars, baladay scimitar, persian scimitar....it just seems I'm not having great success.

My inclination is to put two nails in the wall and balance it horseshoe-pointing-down instead of with the point and pommel facing up, figuring that's how it's balanced to hang, but I'm not sure. Horseshoe-up would probably look better.

It has been hurting since the workshop and throughout my sword practicing and apparently I injured my muscles and tendons around my elbow and I have been diagnosed with Tennis Elbow, which I will now coin the term Sword Elbow in relation to us bellydancers. :)

I dont remember a particular moment when I hurt it but I hurt most of the time (fibromylagia) so if I did hurt it, I brushed it off and kept going.

It definiately hurts now.

Docs recommendation was ice then heat and if it doesnt work, then cortisone shots. He warned me that if I get the shot, I'm not going to like him very much cuz it hurts like hell. hehe! He said he will make the recommendation for the shot since I use my arms in dance. *gulp*

Has anyone else developed Sword Elbow???

What are some recommendations to prevent that from happening?

I don't plan on performing anytime soon, but I'd like to get really comfortable with the sword, and I thought that learning to use one at the same time as learning to dance would help my gain that sense of familiarity with it.

I really like the look of the Kult of Anthena Balady scimitar. It looks a bit more kick-butt than some of the other swords, and I've heard good things about it. I know it's a bit heavier than some, which can be harder on the head but easier to balance, and I realize that although it isn't a battle-ready sword, that point is still going to be dangerously sharp if I mess up. (This is my disclaimer, "Yes, know the risks" section!)

What do any of you out there who own this sword think of it as a sword for a beginner? I would really appreciate your opinions! Thank you!
As a relative newbie to swords, it got me thinking - what do you do to ensure that your sword is more than just a prop? What moves/techniques can you use to make sure that your sword is more than just a piece of metal balancing on your head?
I'll be travelling to Taiwan this year to teach a week-long sword dance intensive in Taipei. The sponsor says that not a lot of people have swords there, and I know I will be limited in what I can bring (like maybe 6 swords), so I'd like to pass on a more-local-to-Asia source for his participants to order swords. Many of these people will be new to sword, and so an inexpensive Indian prop sword would be fine. In fact, the lighter/inexpensive swords are preferred for this group. Any ideas for sources for direct import to Taipei?

Hello,

I just saw your post about the Dragon Scimitar. I just wanted to let you all know that it does balance hilt up or down (at least the ones I sell on Ebay do). There's just a trick to it. So get it off the mantle! Here are my instructions:

If you would like the hilt to point down (the most simple way to make the sword balance) unscrew the dragon head, and flip the handle pieces around, screw the head back on snugly. The head should either point straight up or straight down when screwed back on.

For the hilt to point up (as a real sword would), you'll need a rubber washer from Home Depot. Unscrew the head, put the rubber washer between the head and the hand grip. Put the head back on and screw on till it's fairly snug. The head may need to tilt slightly to the left or right to obtain balance, just tinker with it a bit and see what works best for you. (the new shipments I am getting don't even need the washer, they just need the "lilt fix" listed below)

If you should ever drop your sword, or have someone sit on it, or what ever, and it doesn't balance as well (usually lilts to the side instead of standing up straight) you can fix this minor damage by checking the direction of the lilt and bending it gently over your knee in the opposite direction. Check for balance and repeat as needed. To clean your sword, use a high grade machine oil (I use sewing machine oil).

A few cautions, do not leave the sword in your car trunk for long periods of time especially if it's not a smooth riding car, as the constant jiggle isn't good for the screw threads. Also do not over tighten, as you can strip the screw threads on the hilt. If you do strip it out you can always just decide what direction you want the hilt permanently and use some gorilla glue to hold it all in place. Do not store the sword in a leather container, as the dyes and chemicals used to process leather will cause pitting (black marks) in the sword.

Tips for balancing:
*My favorite non slip device (should you choose to use one) is a thin strip of sand paper super glued to the balance point and trimmed down.
*Practice with a head band at first especially as you can bruise your head taking the sword on and off. It's not dangerous, just uncomfortable.
*When turning with the sword, always turn your head slightly in the direction you're going before beginning into the turn.
*I usually have beginner students start with lots of padding, like a turban, then gradually reduce it as they get used to balancing.

I live in NEPA and am hoping to meet other dancers (or, like me, wanna-be dancers) in this area who might be interested in meeting and learning from one another. I have not been able to find a teacher in this area so I've been trying to learn using videos. As a result of dancing alone in my apartment (with just cats for company), what started out as basic stagefright has developed into somehting with enormous proportions. I even get nervous dancing in front of the cats these days.....my poor boyfriend has NEVER seen me dance.

I think/hope that a casual group type situation might be the first baby step toward getting past the fear. So if anyone is in this area and interested in getting a group together (probably after the holidays), please let me know. Thanks.

In the meantime, I'll be here, trying to learn and absorb, and offer an opinion if I have one.

I want to add more cool moves to my sword dancing (!) and was wondering if you have any suggestions on exercices to do to reinforce my arms and wrists?
I have really small wrists with not much flesh on it so...
it is difficult to hold the sword in place
(and it hurts too!)

and, while balancing it on arm,
is the muscles relaxed to make it stay there
or do you contract to have a firm hold?

I've tried both with not much success,

thanks for the help
After my trip to TF2006 and witnessing Sabine's magnificent sword solo with the dual Cas Iberia swords (my jaw drops everytime I watch the video!), myself and my dance partner have searched high and low & have FINALLY found a supplier for Cas Iberia Scimitars in Australia. And as I have my own business I can buy them at wholesale prices - Hooray!!!
However, we want to dull the edges for the safety of all & due to the likelihood that we would have it confiscated by the police here.
I used to do re-enactment and was assuming that we could just do it with an Angle Grinder and then sand off any burrs....but was worried about it affecting the polish on the blade.
Has anyone else done this and has it affected the finish of the blade in any way?
Cheers
My troupe just received our swords and scimitars from Kult of Athena. They are beautiful and even came with nice leather sheaths. My favorite is my Moorish Scimitar which is big, scary and sharp (I'll need to have the edge dulled a little). They are both nicely balanced. The Moorish was $34.99 and the Baladay was $44.95. I was very doubtful because of the price but these swords are far superior to the beginner $50 version we all had before. We are in love with our swords and can't seem to put them down! I posted some pics in my photos but they are tiny. You can view them at www.kultofathena.com.

Hello,

I have been lurking on this particular tribe a lot but reading and practicing with my caberet style sword for a couple of years now. I am a covereted Tribal dancer so my cab sword does not really fit my new image or as a part of a duet which is what I want to do, so over the past year I have been biding my time, waiting for one of my students to show an interest (and the ability) in doing swords, and I recently found me such a student so we decided it was time to get swords that would match and of a size that was fitting of our duet!

In particular after taking a sword workshop with Ziah (of Awalim in Atlanta GA) in Athens last July, I have been coveting Ziah's sword and was delighted to find that her supplier was going to be an event I attended this past weekend, TribalCon in Altanta GA! These are the swords I am referring to here: http://awalim.tribe.net/photos/cfa14a92-d680-48d7-990c-b360d5d76285

So, my desire has finally come to fruition and I just bought two of the Cas Iberia Scimitar type Belly Dance Swords this weekend at TribalCon from "Lisa Wylie" <lisaewylie@msn.com> who carries the same big swords that Ziah and Awalim use for a VERY reasonable price.

Gorgeous, big, heavy and sharp! Huzzah!

Oh, but if you haven't danced with a sword before, I am not sure I would recommend these for beginners!

I decided to just buy one I could afford, so I could really get accustomed to dancing with it and really know first hand what I like and don't like about it (and so I didn't have to wait until some big festival with vendors so I could try a bunch out).

Here's the one I got: http://www.kylemusic.com/product/90858/ - it's quite well balanced, and has the added bonus of a really cool looking grip - a lion chasing his prey. The gentleman who owns the store was quite nice, too, and shipped very promptly.

I'm actually sitting at my computer at my job with it on my head right now! Not only good practice for sword dancing, but also for touch typing! Gives me a giggle every time someone walks by my cube - no one has noticed yet!

So the next question is - what are your favorite ways to practice (other than sitting at a computer with it on your head - giggling)? I'm going to go to some sword-specific classes, and just practice at home, but I'm assuming that I can't (and won't be good enough for a while to) bring it to a regular belly dance class. Do you recommend the bean bag/basket in class thing? Does anything else even come close to simulating the kind of balance needed to keep this thing on while dancing?

OK - time to stop twittering for now - thanks galz and guyz!
